Friday Night Spring Flicks

This spring, summer and fall over 25 free movies will be shown at Pershing Square every Friday night from May through October. Pack a picnic, bring a blanket or lawn chair and join us for a fun selection of free films like Top Gun, 500 Days of summer, Grease, Bird Cage, Captain America and a scary selection of Halloween films all through October. Films are shown on a 20' foot inflatable screen and start at 8:00pm. Family dogs are welcome if they are well-behaved and kept on a leash. For quick and easy access to Pershing Square take the Metro (Pershing Square 5th street stop) or park in the Pershing Square Garage.

MAY: Flashback 80's Films

May 3 / The Breakfast Club

Five students report for Saturday morning detention. While not complete strangers, each of them comes from a different clique, and they seem to have nothing in common. They gather in the high school library, where they are ordered not to speak or move from their seats or sleep by the assistant principal. He assigns a 1000-word essay in which each student must write about who he or she thinks they are. The students pass the hours by arguing and smoking and goofing on the VP. Gradually they open up to each other and discover how they have a lot more in common than they thought.

May 10 /Risky Business

Tells the story of Joel whose parents go on a trip and leave him alone in charge of the family home. One of his friends convinces him to answer a personal ad. Thing gets quickly out of control which results in a series of accidents such as furniture being stolen and his father's car falling into a river. With his parents returning soon Joel has to juggle between solving the situation and make sure everything looks like the same it did before his parents left.

May 17 / *Desperately Seeking Susan

Roberta is an unfulfilled suburban housewife living in Fort Lee, New Jersey who is fascinated with a woman she only knows about by reading messages to and from her in the personals section of a New York City tabloid. This fascination reaches a peak when one such ad with the headline "Desperately Seeking Susan" proposes a rendezvous in Battery Park with the man who regularly seeks her. Roberta goes to Battery Park too, gets a glimpse of the woman (Madonna) and in a series of events involving mistaken identity, amnesia, and other farcical elements Roberta goes from voyeur to participant in an Alice in Wonderland-style plot, ostensibly motivated by the search for a pair of stolen Egyptian earrings.

May 24 / Pretty In Pink

A romantic comedy-drama film about love and social cliques in 1980s American high schools High school senior Andie Walsh is a working-class girl who has a crush on one of the rich, preppie boys in her school, Blane McDonough. When Andie and Blane try to get together, they encounter resistance from their respective social circles.

May 31 / Back to the Future

A teenager is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown, and must make sure his high-school-age parents unite in order to save his own existence. An all-time 80's classic film.

JUNE: Summer "Camp" Films

June 7 / Hairspray

Tracy Turnblad, an overweight high-school student whose only dream is to be on a local Baltimore teen dance program. While her father tells her to follow her dreams, her mother Edna reminds her that she doesn't look like the girls on that show. After impressing the show's host, Tracy earns a coveted spot on the program, but when she becomes a popular addition to the cast, she earns the wrath of the prettiest girl in school -- a girl whose mother just happens to operate the local television station. Tracy's visit to detention hall opens her eyes to the racial tension on the show. Tracy attempts to integrate the races on her favorite program.

June 14 / The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

Three unique performing artist contract to perform a drag show at a resort in Alice Springs, a resort town in the remote Australian desert. En route, it is discovered that the woman they've contracted with is one of the traveler's wife. Three friends, three lives, one persuasion and a pink bus named Priscilla head into the Australian desert with their colorful, extravagant show in a road movie that brings culture clash to the forefront of a comedy of errors. A mixture of vast landscapes, narrow minds and a melancholy, reflective mood that with the help of a larger than life gal that is Priscilla she more than widens the comfort zones and finds not just new horizons but also finds that is lost.

June 21 / Grease

A musical about teens in love in the 50's! It's California, 1959 and greaser Danny Zuko and Australian Sandy Olsson are in love. They spend time at the beach, but when they go back to school, what either of them doesn't know is that they both now attend Rydell High. Danny's the leader of the T-Birds, a group of black-jacket greasers while Sandy hangs with the Pink Ladies, a group of pink-wearing girls led by Rizzo. When they clash at Rydell's first pep rally, Danny isn't the same Danny at the beach. They try to be like each other so they can be together.

June 28 / The Bird Cage

Armand Goldman owns a popular nightclub in South Miami Beach. His longtime friend Albert stars there as Starina. "Their" son Val (actually Armand's by his one heterosexual fling, twenty years before) comes home to announce his engagement to the daughter of a US Senator, and vice president of the Committee for Moral Order. The Senator and family descend upon South Beach to meet Val and his father and "mother..." and what ensues is comic chaos.
