Special Projects and programs Wonderful Outdoor World (WOW) Wonderful Outdoor World (WOW) is an overnight camping experience in neighborhood parks where young people learn about camping, outdoor recreation, and environmental education. WOW started as a pilot program in Los Angeles and has since spread to other cities throughout the nation. Our WOW program first received national attention when participating as an equestrian unit in the 1999 Rose Parade. Approximately 100 recreation centers throughout the City of Los Angeles participate in the Summer Food Services Program for Children. Providing free, nutritionally-balanced lunches for our young people, ages 1-18, is the goal of this program. This popular program gets its funding from the United States Department of Agriculture. Each meal features nutritious components from the five basic food groups. Meals are available per age qualification, without regard to race, color, national origin, age, or disability. Children 17 and under, seniors 65 and older, and the disabled of all ages were invited to swim for free at all 58 city pools.
