Judith Valles
Member

Judith Valles has over 40 years experience in the field of education. Her leadership experiences range from academics, community relations, employee-employer relations to student affairs. She received her Honorary Doctorate in Education from the University of Redlands and a Master of Arts in Spanish Literature from the University of California, Riverside. Her Doctoral Studies on Community College Leadership were completed at the University of California, Los Angeles. Most recently, she served as the first Latina Mayor of a city of over 100,000 population, San Bernardino from 1997-2006. While serving as Mayor of San Bernardino, she received the Edward R. Roybal Award for Outstanding Public Service in recognition of her exemplary leadership in public office and voicing the interests of the constituents and the Latino community.

In 1965, Judith Valles was appointed to the San Bernardino Valley College faculty and taught Spanish until 1984. In addition to being an instructor, she led the Department of Foreign Languages, chaired the Division of Humanities, was Dean of Extended Day and Summer Session, and Executive Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs

In 1987, Valles was invited to lecture on gender and leadership issues as a visiting professor at Harvard University‟s School of Education and has been the subject of two Doctoral Dissertations on leadership

In 1988, Valles was appointed President of Golden West College – the first Latina to be president of a post secondary institution in California and the fourth president of the college. She was the chief executive of that campus until 1993. During her presidency at Golden West, she was appointed to fill an unexpired term on San Bernardino Community College District‟s (SBCCD) Board of Trustees. Since 'retiring,' from higher education, Valles served as acting President at Coastline and Oxnard Community Colleges. Later, she was elected to her own term on the SBCCD's Board of Trustees and worked as a consultant for the Association of Community College Trustees.

In addition to her professional work, Valles served on multiple state commissions and citizen advisory committees including the CEO Board of California, California College Trustees, Peace Officers Standard and Training Board, the Commission of Innovation, the San Bernardino Symphony Association Board, San Bernardino Chamber of Commerce, and the Executive Committee for the National Conference of Mayors.

Valles was a recipient of the Citizen of Achievement Award from the League of Women Voters (1989) and the YWCA Outstanding Women of Orange County Award (1990). She was inducted into the San Bernardino Valley College Alumni Hall of Fame (1991) and was recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives as Outstanding Woman of the Year (2000). The University of California, Riverside honored Valles at the „Women Sustaining the American Spirit Luncheon‟, whose accomplishments have significantly impacted the lives of individuals in the Inland Empire (2002).

Furthermore, she has produced and hosted a Spanish speaking television show, "Impacto," for KVCR-TV and has been involved in the performing arts. Currently, Valles produces and hosts a television talk show, “La Voz”, for KCSB.

On February 12, 2008, the Board of Trustees of the Los Angeles Community College District named Judith Valles as the new president of Los Angeles Mission College in Sylmar, California.
